8 Ways to Keep Your Kitchen Clean

Your kitchen is an area within your home that is constantly being used, and maybe not as regularly cleaned. You probably use your kitchen to cook every evening, which may mean that it gets messy pretty quickly and easily.

Why is it important to keep your kitchen clean?

Bacteria and germs can very easily build up in a kitchen when there is constantly food about. You also want to reduce the risk of any unwanted pests from entering your home because they are drawn to the food in your kitchen. You’ll want to avoid any chance of illness-causing bacteria from entering your home, as this can make yourself and your family poorly.

Making sure your kitchen always looks clean

The reality is that your kitchen will most likely need cleaning more than you do now. Get into the habit of keeping clutter to a minimum and making sure you’re cleaning as you go. Here are some tips and tricks you can use to make sure that your kitchen is sparkling clean.

Take out the rubbish regularly

Taking the rubbish out can be a pain, and it can also be a chore that you might put off doing for a while. But, it’s essential. Don’t let your rubbish bin pile up because this will attract the kind of home visitors that you don’t necessarily want in your home, and no, we don’t mean your in-law parents, we mean vermin like rats and mice. Ideally, you should change your bin every day, but if this isn’t possible then your bin shouldn’t sit in your kitchen for any longer than 3 days.

Replace your sponges often

Sponges can harbour a lot of dirt, especially when you’re cleaning dirty plates and then are reusing the same sponges. Make sure you’re changing these often otherwise they can just be a method of transferring germs from one place to another. Some cloths can be put in the washing machine and others may be used only once. A top tip is to have different colour cloths for each area of your home. For example, maybe a red sponge for your washing up and a yellow one for your countertops.

Spray your countertops

Countertops can be another harbouring place for bacteria which means they should be sprayed regularly. If you’ve got countertops that are made out of a high-end material such as marble, make sure that you’re using a non-abrasive cleaning spray or with warm water with a splash of white wine vinegar in it. A grimy countertop is the perfect place for germs to grow, so wiping them regularly will remove this. Make sure to wipe them after cooking each time to remove any spilt food debris.

Clean as you go

Say you’re cooking dinner for your entire family, clean up as you go. This way you can keep your mess to a minimum. For example, if you’re waiting for your dinner to cook in the oven, take this as an opportunity to clean any mess that you’ve made when preparing your food. Just putting a few minutes aside to do this will save you time in the long run as you’re completing tasks while you’re also cooking.

Clean up any spillages as soon as they happen

Spillages are bound to happen, especially if you’ve got children in your home. So long as you clean them up as soon as possible they shouldn’t stain or cause any other problems within the kitchen. However, if you leave spillages in your kitchen for long periods of time, bacteria will grow and again, it will attract unwanted pests. Also, if you leave spillages on the floor or surfaces for a while, they can become hardened to the floor and then become even harder to remove.

Make sure everything has a home in your kitchen

The easiest way to prevent items from building up in your kitchen is to give each item a home within your kitchen. This will stop the urge to just dump things in the place they don’t belong. Have a place for your cutlery, pans, tinned food, sauces, plates, bowls – there really does need to be a place for everything.

Don’t forget about your floors

When cleaning, it can be a real hassle to clean your floors. You’ve probably got to move some furniture and not go in the room for a couple of hours which can be a pain. However, don’t neglect them as a lot of dirt can get into your flooring and stay there unless removed. If you’ve got carpets, use a carpet cleaner and vacuum cleaner to remove any stains or mud which has been previously trampled into your floors. If you’ve got wooden flooring, then a mop might work better. Spills tend to clean off wooden floors easier than carpet, but if you’ve got a stubborn stain that won’t go then it might be an idea to get a professional carpet cleaning service in.

Get the family involved

Cleaning doesn’t have to be a task that you do on your own. Getting the family involved in the cleaning routine will not only make it easier but more time-efficient too. It’s so easy to make cleaning a fun task, especially if you’ve got young children, and it also teaches them important life skills too. Getting everyone involved will mean that you’ll spend less time cleaning and more time doing the things you enjoy and want to do.

If all else fails, get a professional cleaning service to come in

We get it, sometimes you don’t want to spend your time cleaning, you want to spend it doing the things that you enjoy. If this is the case, then getting a professional cleaning company can save you a lot of hassle and time. If you were to get a cleaning service to come into your home, you can guarantee that you will be getting a deep clean and one that will see your kitchen sparkling from top to bottom once more.
